About Baltimore
Named after Lord Baltimore in the Irish House of Lords, Baltimore is located in north-central Maryland along the tidal portion of the Patapsco River which is an arm of Chesapeake Bay. This major U.S. seaport is situated closer to major Midwestern markets than any other major seaport on the East Coast. Historically a working-class port town, Baltimore has sometimes been dubbed a "city of neighborhoods," with over 300 identified districts. Other downtown areas include Fells Point, once a favorite entertainment spot for sailors is now refurbished. With its cobbled stone streets and its waterfront location, Historic Fells Point has long been a favorite attraction for young and old alike and was featured in the movie Sleepless in Seattle. Little Italy, located between the other two, is where much of Baltimore's Italian-American community is based. Mt. Vernon is located north of downtown and designated a National Landmark Historic District. It is one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and originally home to Baltimore's most wealthy and fashionable families. Baltimore has shifted to a service-oriented economy. Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital, located in the northern part of Baltimore, are now the city's largest employers.
