About Fort Worth
Fort Worth was originally established in 1849 as a protective Army outpost. Situated on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River along the legendary Chisholm Trail, early on Fort Worth became the center of cattle drives and the ranching industry. The city of Fort Worth contains a vast number of natural gas wells. Credited are the advances in horizontal drilling technology, which yields vast natural gas reserves in the Barnett Shale located directly under the city. Today the City of Fort Worth and many residents are dealing with the benefits and issues associated with the natural gas reserves underground. Texas Christian University is a medium-sized, liberal arts school with a student population of about 8,700. The campus is located adjacent to the Fort Worth Zoo and the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. The historic Fort Worth Stockyards is nearby and many students visit Billy Bob's Honky Tonk on Thursday nights for country music and dancing.
