About New Jersey
New Jersey has the highest population density and the second highest median income of any state in the USA. Although New Jersey is broken up into 21 counties (13 dating from the colonial era) it is really thought of as five regions based on natural geography and population. The Gateway Region lies within the New York metropolitan area. Connected to New York City via various bridges and tunnels many northeastern NJ residents commute into the city to work. Also located here is the Newark Liberty International Airport one of the busiest airports in the United States. Northwestern New Jersey, called the "Skylands" is wooded, rural, and mountainous but still a popular place to live. The well known "Jersey Shore" along the Atlantic Coast has its own natural, residential and lifestyle characteristics owing to its location by the ocean. The central-west and southwest are within metropolitan Philadelphia and are included in the Delaware Valley. The fifth region is the Pine Barrens in the interior of the southern part. Covered rather extensively by mixed pine and oak forest, it has a much lower population density than much of the rest of the state. The New Jersey Devils, the New Jersey Nets, Red Bull New York, New York Giants and the New York Jets all play within the state.
