About San Francisco
San Francisco is a principal banking and finance center as well as a major cultural and transportation hub of the central California coast. Encompassing a land area of only 46.7 square miles on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, San Francisco becomes the second-most densely populated large city in the USA. Although the Spanish fort and a mission named for Francis of Assisi established the city in 1776, it was the California Gold Rush in 1848 that propelled the city into a period of rapid growth, transforming it into the largest city on the West Coast at the time. Large portions of the city were destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire then quickly rebuilt for the 1915 World's Fair. San Francisco was the port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater during World War II. Today, San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination, renowned for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, the cable cars, and Chinatown.
